finishing: the recruitment process for my school's 2018-2019 class! For those of you who may not be regular readers, I'm an instructional coach and the director of a public school-within-a-school for eighth grade students that focuses on Project Based Learning. This is our first year and it was awesome to see that the word has gotten out about our program and we will need to do a lottery for admissions since we have more applications than spots. I've had about 20 current students helping with sharing information about our program at meetings with parents, students, and seventh grade teachers, and I've also been fielding a lot of parent phone calls.

wishlisting: felt letter boards! I'd been seeing them on Instagram for a while, of course, and thought they were cute, but never felt like I needed one until I started thinking about how useful they could be in photos of Baby Quinn when he starts reaching milestones. Emily from Jones Design Company did a letterboard round-up on her blog recently, and I'm leaning toward this one from Target - I like the square shape and the price is right.

subscribing: in the process of creating our baby registry, we realized how many baby things we just knew nothing about, and left the stores with several items on the helpful checklists they provided still unchecked. I put Mr. Q in charge of research monitors since he is our household technology enthusiast, but for everything else I have really appreciated the product reviews on Lucie's List and subscribed to the newsletter for helpful advice delivered weekly. 

watching: the Winter Olympics! I was a little underwhelmed by Pyongchang's Opening Ceremonies, but I'm enjoying watching some of the events this weekend. Growing up in the 90's I pretty much became a lifelong fan of figure skating, and I've fallen in love with married pairs skating couple Chris Knierim and Alexa Scimeca Knierim while watching them compete in the team event. Also, Leslie Jones from Saturday Night Liveis live-tweeting while watching the Games and it's hilarious.

hearting: I've been Pinning a bunch of floral manicures lately and considering trying nail wraps again (I didn't have the patience for the application process the first time around, but I love the idea of perfect nails for 2 weeks). So perfect for Valentine's Day!

pinspiration: fiesta forever

Since school starts next week for us, I have to remind myself that it is still actually summer. I'm going to be intentional about this - that means sitting on the patio after school, going to local festivals on the weekends, and crashing my sister-in-law's pool as much as possible. Another thing that's definitely going to remind me that summer is still in full force? The heat! It's still in the 90's here in Virginia and very, very humid. Finally, the Rio Olympics begin tomorrow with the Opening Ceremonies, and I'll get to feed my Olympics obsession. Four years ago, as the London Olympics drew to a close, I celebrated the Closing Ceremonies by experimenting with some Brazilian recipes - my favorites were the pan fried herbed pork chops, hearts of palm and avocado salad, and avocado-coconut milkshake. I also did one of my one and only fashion DIYs - my Olympics Ring tie-dyed shirt. This year, I'm thinking I'll be a little less literal with my Olympics-inspired fashion: instead of a shoutout to Baron de Coubertin, I'll be incorporating some Rio-inspired colors into my wardrobe, like this summer's Pantone pick, fiesta red. For this week's Pinspiration, I've also thrown in a Joni Mitchell quote because my 70's obsession, like the humidity, isn't going away any time soon.

Style: Go Team USA!

Team USA's Opening Ceremony uniforms by Ralph Lauren received a lot of media attention, most of it negative.  Somehow, our athletes' busy American flag printed sweaters looked much better en masse during the Parade of Nations than they had on the models on our morning talk shows!  If you're looking for something that's patriotic but a little less grandma for your Closing Ceremonies festivities, here are a few suggestions:

Snowflakes - Sochi Inspired

Today I'm taking a very subtle approach to Sochi-inspired fashion. Remember those snowflakes from the Opening Ceremony?  You know, the ones that almost-successfully turned into the Olympic Rings?

They were very pretty as snowflakes.  

All things gray, glittery, and clustered with jewels are in right now. The snow on the East Coast may be melting, but the snow on your sweater is appropriate until mid-March.  Let's get to the inspiration, shall we?

Snow and Gold: Sochi Inspired

I think I'm drawn to the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Olympic Games because I love show business in general - theater, music, and dance.  What bigger show is there than one the whole world can watch together?  The pageantry of the Sochi Opening Games included beautiful white and gold costumes suggesting traditional Russian clothing.  I think that a white and gold ensemble would be a very classy choice for a Closing Ceremonies party - or for work today while supporting Team USA's drive for gold medals in sports like curling, ladies' figure skaring, men's ski cross, ladies' ski halfpipe, women's ice hockey, and team Nordic combined cross-country.

Rainbow and Floral: Sochi and Team Germany Inspired

Audiences and commentators had a lot to say about the uniforms Team Germany wore for the Parade of Nations at the Sochi Olympics Opening Ceremony.  German athletes sported red beanies, yellow, green, and robin's-egg blue striped ski jackets, and red pants with a floral pattern.  The overall impression was that of a rainbow; German officials were quick to stress that their wardrobe was not a statement about gay rights in Russia.  Which makes me think (or at least hope) that it totally was.  Either way, I was left wondering: could rainbow and floral ever work, or is it just too much?  The verdict: for the daring, it's totally do-able; just keep the rainbows within a muted palette, make sure the florals keep to the same color scheme, and carry a cute purse.

Carnival Style: Sochi Inspired

How would y'all feel if the rest of this week was all fashion all the time here on Beyond the Aisle?  I started playing around with Polyvore during my little snowcation while watching the Olympics and I couldn't stop.  Here's the first of my Sochi Inspired style boards, sparked by one of my favorite parts of the opening ceremonies: the inflatable-dome tribute to St. Basil's cathedral and Russian street festivals.  Adding carnival colors and whimsical patterns to my wardrobe puts me in a festive mood and makes me feel more confident that spring is on the way!

During the Opening Ceremony of the Sochi Olympics, one of the many standout moments was the Dove of Peace performance, which featured ballerina Diana Vishneva and other dancers performing to music from Swan Lake with glowing, spinning, jellyfish-like props meant to represent doves in flight.  I was intrigued by the unique performance, and did some research on the history of the symbolic Dove of Peace at the Olympics Opening Ceremonies.

The lighting of the Olympic Flame has been accompanied by the release of doves, symbolizing peace, since the post-World War I 1920 Summer games.  Since the Lillehammer, Norway Winter Olympics in 1994, symbolic doves rather than live doves have accompanied the lighting of the Olympic Flame.

In the most recent Winter Olympics, held in Vancouver, Canada in 2010, the Dove of Peace was represented by a projection on the stadium floor during k.d. lang's performance of "Hallelujah."

Turin, Italy's Opening Ceremonies in 2006 featured 28 acrobats creating the Dove of Peace with their bodies.

When the U.S. last hosted the Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002, the Opening Ceremonies included ice skaters flying theatrical dove-shaped kites as Sting and Yo-Yo Ma performed "Fragile."

In Nagano in 1998, biodegradable dove-shaped balloons were released following the lighting of the Olympic Flame.

In Lillehammer, the first symbolic doves were balloons as well, with a larger dove emerging from a large egg shape.

The Summer Olympics have also featured symbolic Dove of Peace in their Opening Ceremonies.  In 2012's Summer games in London, 75 Dove Bikes featuring LED-lit wings entered the stadium in honor of Bradley Wiggins, the British cyclist who'd won the Tour de France just days before, as the Arctic Monkeys played "Come Together."

At Beijing's lavish Opening Ceremonies in 2008, fireworks were used to portray a dove in flight, along with brightly lit dancers arranging themselves in the shape of the Dove of Peace and forming the bird's nest shape of the Beijing National Stadium during the performance by pianist Lang Lang and five-year-old Li Muzi during the artistic section's modern segment.

At the Athens Summer Olympics in 2004, runner George Sabanis carried an olive branch flag symbolizing peace and the city of Athens itself around the stadium, crossing tape dedicated to the previous 27 Olympic Games as he ran.  Doves appeared on three LCD rings representing a globe, which then displayed names of the cities through which the Olympic Flame had journeyed on its way to Athens.  A spectacular fireworks presentation followed the lighting of the Olympic Torch.

Sydney's Opening Ceremony in 2000 included a section which featured the projection of Olympic heroes, a Dove of Peace holding an olive branch, and the Olympic rings on an enormous piece of white cloth that was brought over the crowd in flowing waves, then held by the athletes as Australian singer-songwriter Vanessa Amorosi performed "Heroes Live Forever."

Round the World in 80 Days

In the last U.S. Summer games, Atlanta 1996, the Dove of Peace was represented in several ways:  while film composer John Williams led the orchestra in "Summon the Heroes," performers formed the shape of the Olympic Rings and a flying Dove of Peace with their bodies.  Later, the Dove of Peace arrived again in the form of 100 theatrical dove-shaped paper kites flown by children across the track.

Yesterday I shared the ten most popular posts at Beyond the Aisle from 2012.  They were the posts that had received the most visitors and pageviews, and the posts that have appeared the most on Pinterest!  In reviewing which posts you loved, I realized that we love the same celebrities, creating crafts to wear and to decorate our homes with, and that we love inspiration - beautiful ideas for talented people about how to add color and style to everyday life.  Many of my readers are currently plannings, but the name Beyond the Aisle reminds me that married life can be just as full of sparkle and romance as the wedding day.  In this blog, I want to share ideas to celebrate the ordinary and the extraordinary in our lives.  Here are my personal favorite Beyond the Aisle posts from 2012.

Usually it's all about the color around here, so collecting inspiration for a black and white wedding styled around one of my favorite fall flowers was a lot of fun and a nice change of pace.  More than a year after my own wedding, vintage details are still where my heart lies when it comes to event design.

celebrate: kate middleton's olympic wardrobe

My love of and admiration for Kate Middleton is pretty well-documented here at Beyond the Aisle, and I have pretty much squealed and clapped every time NBC has shown her during the Olympics.  I love that even though she probably could have had an extensive wardrobe, she's been dressing very much like a traveler during the Olympics, repeating and rotating key pieces and using a palette of red, white, cobalt and navy blue, taupe and gray to ensure that everything can be mixed and matched.  Today, I'm looking at what Kate actually wore during the London Olympics.  Tomorrow, I'll share my ideas for how to pack like Kate for a trip, with more affordable pieces.

When the Olympic Torch arrived at Buckingham palace on Thursday, July 26, Kate was patriotic in a white Team GB polo, cobalt Zara "Satin Tourser" jeans with back zippers (available from Zara in black for $19.99 or in cobalt from Zara's German site for 39.95 Euro), and navy Stuart Weitzman "Corkswoon" wedges (available in black patent from Nordstrom for $179, Zappos for $190.99 in a wider range of sizes, or Stuart Weitzman for $375 in nude patent, white patent, or denim).

celebrate: brazilian-themed london 2012 closing ceremonies party recipes

Since London is passing the Summer Olympic Games to Rio de Janeiro for 2016, I think a Brazilian themed party is the greatest idea for this Sunday!  Party stores and even dollar stores should have tropical-themed decorations on sale right now since it's the end of summer- just remember to steer more toward tropical than luau.  A pretty bowl or cake stand piled with pineapples, mangoes and other tropical fruit would be a simple but eye-catching centerpiece.
