Christmas Eve Mini Holiday Home Tour!

As I've mentioned in my posts about our Christmas wreath and DIY ornaments, I let the dream of "peace on Earth" guide my holiday decorating this year. I especially loved how our Christmas tree turned out. When we got out our old tree, which was a hand-me-down from Mr. Q's grandparents, the lights on the top two sections wouldn't function, so it was off to the city on the day after Thanksgiving in search of a new tree.

I've always been really impressed by the awesome things KMart comes up with at Christmas time, so we headed there first and picked out a tree from the Jaclyn Smith collection. It's a 7 foot "Clearwater Slim Cashmere Tree." While the slim shape stands out in the store, it's a perfect fit in our townhouse where space is at a premium. The tree is a little taller than our old one, and a lot more realistic-looking - it has a mix of branch shapes and sizes.

Eliminating red from my Christmas color scheme was the first step toward streamlining my design, and while focusing on "peace on Earth," I was drawn to earth tones, white, and sparkling metallics. The gold tree skirt (also from KMart) really helped to ground the theme (get it?).

I do have my own method for decorating a Christmas tree: I start with ribbon, then add large bulb ornaments toward the center of the tree (along with a few Scentsicles). I used burlap, gold, and silver embroidered ribbon in layers. Next, I add what I think of as "anchor" ornaments - in this year's tree, these were my grandmother's crochet snowflake ornaments and my Smith and Hawken mercury glass pinecones.

I add more bulbs to the outer branches in a spiral pattern - this year, I used matte gold and champagne, shiny silver, and clear bulbs with a snowflake design. Then, I add special, one-of-a-kind ornaments, like our wedding cake ornament, lighthouses from North Carolina, and our brass and pewter travel ornaments.

This year, we bought some new mini glitter ornaments in a range of earth tones, as well as gold glittered pine cone ornaments, while we were at KMart, then headed to JoAnn Fabrics and Michaels, where we picked up clip-on dove ornaments, sparkling gold floral picks, and an adorable little church ornament with a bottle brush tree. My last steps when decorating are to add 3-D elements like poinsettias and floral picks - I just stick them into the branches - and, of course, candy canes (this year I used the Hershey ones with a chocolate stripe!). I'm really pleased with the way our tree turned out - to me, it's the perfect mix of rustic and elegant, peaceful and beautiful.

Merry Christmas! Past tours: 2014, 2013, 2012.

DIY Elegant Woodland Wreath

After seeing how similar my Christmas trees and decor choices have been over the past several years (short version: lots of red), I decided to take my Christmas decorations in a new direction this year. First, I decided to challenge myself to decorate for Christmas without red this year. Then, I zeroed in on the idea that I wanted to guide my spirit this holiday season: world peace. Along the way, my vision of a peaceful, natural Christmas evolved into a glamorous woodland mishmash, and I'm happy with the final result.

Every year when we decorate our tree on the day after Thanksgiving, I decorate our wreath to match the same theme. I think it really gives our home a sense of continuity, and hopefully, the way our visitors are welcomed into our holiday home gives them an idea of the warmth and beauty that they will find inside. I'll be sharing our tree and other decorations in the days to come, but today I wanted to welcome you all to the country townhouse, Christmas style.

As always, I began with a simple wreath form from the craft store. This year I took out everything from last year and started from scratch! The first thing to go on was layered gold and burlap ribbon followed by white poinsettias (artificial, of course - I'm pretty sure I got these from the dollar store!). Three flowers in a triangle shape help to anchor the design. I just stick the poinsettia stems right into the wreath and wrap the wires around the faux pine branches for stability.

We loved adding a dollar-store garland and a simple strand of lights to our front porch decor last year, and I think the white lights look really awesome paired with this year's wreath. After adding the poinsettias to the wreath, I wired on some glittered pine cone ornaments (I found them at KMart) and some shatterproof gold and green mini ornaments found last year at Big Lots.

    holidays: Christmas flashback...

One of my favorite traditions for Thanksgiving Break is decorating our Christmas tree on Black Friday (instead of dealing with crowds at the mall). Having been raised by a Southern Living and Better Homes and Gardens loving mom, I've been decorating themed trees since high school. This week I've been looking back at my Christmas decorations from our first four Country Townhouse trees, and thinking about what this year's theme will be. I love seeing how we've combined some of our favorite decorations over the years - and how my photography skills have improved!

2011: Homespun with red cardinals, burlap, and kraft paper.
2012: Victorian theme (not that you can really tell?) with white poinsettias.

2013: Rustic with burlap, glitter stars, and chalkboard paint ornaments.
2014: Virginia theme with Colonial inspired plaid, cardinals, and gold ornaments.

Do you choose a theme for your holiday décor?
What ideas are you loving this year?

5 Fandom Friday: Halloween Costume Ideas I Love

5 Fandom Friday is a weekly prompt challenge hosted by The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space ChickThis week's #5FandomFriday topic is Halloween Costumes I Want to Wear! You can see the upcoming prompts here at the Female Geek Bloggers community.

    5. Lt. Uhura - I love J.J. Abrams' take on Star Trek and I love Zoe Saldana.  Trek costumes are fairly easy to find at the big costume shops that pop up in empty strip malls this time of year, and I can totally rock go-go boots and a high ponytail.

    4. "Toxic" video characters - Alias was my favorite show in high school and started my obsession with characters who are spies. Then Britney Spears' video for "Toxic" came out and converted me into a Britney van because I was pretty sure it was an Alias tribute. Every single costume in that video is awesome, although I'm pretty sure my version would be more conservative.

    3. Daisy Buchanan - I did a post about creating a 1920's flapper costume a few years ago and still love the idea. I will definitely be Daisy for Halloween one of these days, and I'd love to throw a speakeasy-themed Halloween party.

    2. A Sanderson Sister - The villains of the best Halloween movie of all time would make great costume inspiration for three girl friends (I'm pretty sure I could talk Breeze and my SIL into doing this with me), and witch hats and black, red, and blonde wigs are easy to come by.

    1. Peggy Carter - I can't wait for next weekend because I'm dressing up as my favorite Marvel character (and Dubsmash queen), SSR Agent Peggy Carter! She's a literal boss and she knows her value. Until then, I'll be listening to the Andrews Sisters and watching victory roll hairstyle tutorials on YouTube.

    Christmas Eve Holiday Home Tour

Last year I didn't share our Christmas decor until after Christmas, so I guess I'm doing a little bit better!  This year, I was inspired by our summer vacation to Colonial Williamsburg and decided to do a classic Virginia theme for our Christmas decorations.  I was especially inspired by our state bird, the Cardinal, bright Christmas poinsettias, and plaid and gingham fabrics and trim.

Come on in!  You can see more shots of my cardinal and plaid wreath here.  I was inspired by some of my favorite bloggers' home tours to add a little flair to our banisters this year - Dollar Tree garland looks pretty great paired with plaid ribbon and poinsettias!

Here's our tree!   In addition to cardinals and plaid, I tried to stick to a gold and red color scheme with a few bits of pewter.  The Santa blanket is a little cheesy, but it was a gift from Mr. Q's grandparents when we started dating so I bring it out every year.

I really love it when my gift wrap matches my theme - it's the Type A side of me coming out, I guess.  The plaid gift wrap was a Big Lots find, and the plaid tissue is from the Dollar Tree!  It doesn't take a lot of money to have a really pulled-together Christmas look, but you do have to be willing to shop at several stores for all of your pieces.

Here's my little tribute to the holiday decorations at Colonial Williamsburg, which use a lot of beautiful fruit - mandarin oranges, apples, and pomegranates make a cheerful centerpiece.  Did you notice that my table runner and throw pillows match?  That's because they're all made from the same Big Lots tablecloth!  I used The Happy Housie's envelope pillow tutorial.

I have a little snack station set up on the counter for today's guests.  I've got Christmas plates and napkins (thanks again to Big Lots!) along with Chex Mix, cocoa, and some other munchies.  I made the wee little votive holder by rolling a glass jar in a mixture of Epsom salts and white and gold glitter - I used the same "snowglobe mix" in some Mason jars filled with pinecones that I've scattered around the house for a little extra cheer that will last all winter.

Merry Christmas, friends!  May your holidays be full of peace and joy.

    Social Sunday

    1. What was your college major? Did you ever change majors?

My major for my undergraduate studies was English Literature and my graduate major was Elementary Education.  I actually declared my graduate major first since I was accepted to the five-year Master's degree program at the end of my first year of college.  I considered minoring in Anthropology, but I wasn't able to fit the required linguistics courses into my schedule.

    2. What is the best purchase you’ve made lately?

CeraVe facial cleanser - my skin is the clearest it's been in years!

    3. What is something silly we don’t know about you?

The movie Thelma and Louise makes me cry.

    4. What is your favorite holiday?

It used to definitely be Christmas, but as the years have gone by I have really started to love Halloween more and more - not so much the creepy aspect but the imaginative side.

    5. What is the first thing you do when you wake up?

    Take a shower - otherwise I will be grumpy/groggy until I do.

    organization goals for 2014.

I hope everyone's 2014 is off to a good start so far.  Every January here on the blog, I set some goals that will help me keep our townhouse organized and efficient.  I like to think it's my goals that keep our home from devolving into a cluttered shambles, but I'm pretty sure it's my neatnik husband.  Either way, here's what worked in 2013 and my goals for this year:

I am still a total planner devotee.  I have a wall calendar for family/friend stuff, a big notebook-style planner and Google calendar for school, a small purse-sized planner for the blog.  In 2013, I tried a new sticky note system for lesson plans (based on the one made popular by Victoria, a.k.a. The Wise and Witty Teacher) that helped me visualize what I could accomplish in a week.  It keeps my Sundays hyperventilation free!

I organized my closet.  I didn't do a 30 x 30 wardrobe challenge in 2013 even though it seemed to be all the rage.  Instead, I reasoned that I want to be able to wear all of my clothes, and my biggest problem was not being able to find items quickly.  Now, I've got everyday work clothes on the left side of my closet (easiest to get to), and casual items and dresses on the right.  I'm storing summer clothes and luggage on the top shelf, and I added a plastic drawer for shoes and purses.  So far, this system is helping me mix and match a lot of different outfits rather than getting into a rut.

Ongoing organization goals for 2014:  Warning, pictures of my messy townhouse coming up!

    1. Try the hanger trick in my closet and consign or donate the items I no longer wear.  Have you heard about this trick?  I took about ten minutes this week to turn all of the hangers in my closet the "wrong" way.  When I wear an item, I'll put it back the "right" way.  By summer, I'll be able to easily see which items I don't wear and get rid of them with no regrets.  It doesn't hurt that one of my friends recently opened a consignment shop right here in town, so I no longer have the "consignment stores are all the way in the 'Noke" excuse.

Midnight In Paris NYE Tablescape & a Blogoversary Giveaway

This year we have decided to have a very low-key New Year's Eve dinner at home.  The crafter in me couldn't resist getting creative with a tablescape for the holiday, though!  I'd already decided to turn my chalkboard chargers into "clocks" for the occasion and tried my hand at writing my numerals like those seen on French market signage.

Then I had the idea to use my 2" scalloped circle punch to create some giant confetti... kind of like champagne bubbles  I used some leftover gift wrap, gift bags, and glitter tissue paper from Christmas.  My brain started working overtime... French numerals... sparkly gold and silver bubbles...

Midnight in Paris!  I remembered the Eiffel Tower I received from my Cupid Swap partner, which has been holding bracelets throughout the fall... and gave it pride of place in the center of the table, accompanied by a couple of faux mercury glass candleholders and a bottle of bubbly.

Just because we'll be watching Ryan Seacrest in our P.J.'s doesn't mean we can't have a fancy table setting, right?

I just love all the sparkle!

    Happy 2014, friends!

Holiday Home Tour: Merry Christmas from the Country Townhouse!

Continuing with my "better late than never" approach from yesterday, I finally got my act together and got my house ready for a holiday blog tour.  I love poinsettias so they are always on my front door wreath.  This year, I added silver ribbon that was left over from trimming our Christmas tree.  You can see last year's Dickens-inspired version here and the original, simple wreath from 2011 here.  With a sturdy wreath form, silk florals, and craft picks, the possibilities are endless, and I really like the elegance the ribbon adds.

When I ran out of space on our kitchen bulletin board to display cards, I used polka dot and striped washi tape to stick them directly to the walls!  I got the idea from this post at Design Improvised.

My counters are stacked with holiday treats for family members and drop-in guests!  This year I made The Dwelling Tree's funfetti sugar cookies and Hershey's crinkle cookies.  Both turned out GREAT - I was finally organized enough to make all of the dough on the 23rd, chill it overnight in the fridge, and do the actual baking on Christmas Eve morning.  I found the square snowflake and cellophane wrapping kits at Big Lots and A.C. Moore.

You can see how I made my chalkboard chargers and matching Christmas tree ornaments in yesterday's post.

These crochet snowflakes are a family heirloom.

The penguin ornament was a gift from my mom this year - she said it was calling my name - and the clear snowflake ornaments and white frosted ornaments are new additions from Michael's.  I tried to keep an overall simple, sparkly, snowy theme in mind and I used very little red and no green or gold on the tree this year.

I was really excited to find Hershey's chocolate mint flavored candy canes!  It's the little things, y'all.

My little snow jars were one of my first holiday crafts this year and probably the easiest - I added Epsom salts, mini pinecones left over from Breeze's wedding, and colorful tiny jingle bells and called it done.  The square Mason jar was a gift from Breeze.  I'm not really a big candy dish person (they make me feel like an old lady) but apparently they are a popular teacher gift, so I went with it.
