#5FandomFriday: What's In My Purse

5 Fandom Friday is a weekly prompt challenge hosted by The Nerdy Girlie and Super Space Chick. This week's #5FandomFriday topic is "What's In My Purse." Sadly, I don't have anything really geeky that I carry around (though I always seem to have a puzzle or some sort of squishy ball that I keep on hand for especially distracted students, and this week it's a Rubik's Cube!). Here are the 5 items I legally shouldn't be allowed to leave the house without.

1. Portable planner - I've recently gotten fascinated the world of bullet journaling and planner decorating thanks to Tumblr and Pinterest, and hope to start a fancy new journal soon, but in my own life I'm still using 2 premade planners: a big one that stays open on my desk at school, and this purse-sized version that matches perfectly, used to keep track of blog stuff and appointments. They are made by a company called Blue Sky and I always find them at Wal-Mart during back-to-school season (As a teacher, I operate on an August-July calendar).

2. Wallet - I feel like the switch from a Vera Bradley change purse to a big ol' checkbook-sized wallet was a sign of adulthood. I have three wallets this size that also make good night-out clutches in a pinch. This one is Jessica Simpson from TJ Maxx and holds Very Important Things like my library card.

3. SNACK! - Since I found out I was pre-diabetic, I've been trying to eat small meals throughout the day instead of three big meals. If I don't eat a snack during my planning period work and again between lunch and dinner, I become HANGRY.

4. Anxiety meds - Just being totally honest here. Thank you, anxiety meds, for helping me get my life back on track. I don't need you very often anymore, but I like knowing you are there.

5. Sunglasses - I'm a wimp who can't stand the idea of poking my eyes every day to put in contacts, so I have to switch glasses every time I go from indoors to outdoors. Since I have to wear sunglasses for driving and outdoor activities, I make sure mine are cute but also classic enough to be in style for several years since prescription lenses are expensive. My current pair are Ray-Bans called "Jackie Ohh" and I love that the color of the frames fades from brown to purple.

One of this summer's biggest trend is a tropical spin on safari-inspired colors: olive green and toasted almond paired with fun pops of magenta and tribal-style prints. It's a great place to start a warm-weather capsule wardrobe or vacation packing list!

Spring Color: Dazzling Blue

Pantone confused style bloggers and fashion magazines alike when they announced a Color of Spring before announcing 2014's Color of the Year, Radiant Orchid.  For a few weeks, Dazzling Blue was enjoying full-on Color of the Year status thanks to the misconception.  This year's take on cobalt is bright, saturated, and cheerful, and can look modern, edgy, or completely feminine depending on how it's styled.  Designers are creating Dazzling Blue takes on several of our favorite trend pieces - pencil skirts, studded shoes, envelope clutches, cluster earrings, and of course, florals.  Which of the pieces below is your favorite?

Holiday 2013: Gold and Emerald

So yesterday I was going through my closet, pulling out items I might want to wear for this week's many holiday-themed activities.  The common thread (literally) was green.  What better way to end 2013 than with the color of the year, emerald, paired with shades of champagne and gold for a perfectly festive holiday?

get colorful: pink for the holidays

I'm not sure what it is about the holiday season, but every year I seem to get sucked into loving the brightest pink pieces I can find.  The shade of flambé‎ pink that would intimidate me in any other season seems just right during this time of year - so festive and colorful!  This year's colorblocked, striped, and dotted pieces set just the right tone for a holiday celebration.  Let's party!

Fall 2013: Samba Red

As Thanksgiving and winter holidays approach, I wanted to focus my fashion posts on items that would be easy to incorporate into outfits for special occasions, holiday photos, or holiday gifts. Pantone calls this season's red "Samba" and it's the perfect spicy color for a festive celebration!

Fall 2013: Samba Red

1. Red Herring floral dress from Debenham's  2. Banana Republic satchel
3. Zoya "Livingston" nail polish  4. Kate Spade scarf from Piperlime
5.  Kate Spade tote from Piperlime  6. Kenzo "FlowerTag" perfume from Sephora
7. Essie "Twin Sweater Set" nail polish  8. Old Navy peacoat  9. Hunter rain boots

My favorite celebrity take on samba red is Michelle Dockery's Prada dress at this year's Emmy- I love the bright red colorblocked with oxblood burgundy - it's unusual and a lot of people would probably expect these two colors to clash, but the clean lines make it work.

Fall 2013: Dijon and Seafoam

As soon as I saw this Tracy Reese runway photo from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City I became obsessed with the color pairing.  The spring outfit pairs a light teal sweater embellished with black and white flowers with a dijon-yellow top and black shorts.  Tracy Reese always uses yellow in really creative ways in her collection, and I got to thinking about how to pair these colors in a way more appropriate for fall.  This fall's popular dijon mustard yellow looks great with pops of seafoam teal, and together they pair well with cognac brown, gray, or black!  It's an unusual combination, but I think it works!

style: A Southern Prep Game Day

If you've been hanging out here for a while you know I'm a proud graduate of the University of Virginia - for a poor girl from a small rural town, getting to attend one of the oldest and most respected colleges in the U.S. was a dream come true.  One of my favorite times of year on Grounds was always football season!  Even though I'm not a huge sports fan, I loved the atmosphere of school spirit and celebration.

It's been over a decade since UVa faced BYU and the Wahoos will be opening our season this year by hosting our non-conference opponents from the midwest.  The game day wardrobe motto when I started college was "guys in ties, girls in pearls," and UVa students were known for the game day "fashion show."  It was a little overwhelming at first for me - at my high school, the height of "preppy" fashion was Abercrombie + Fitch - I'd never even heard of Lily Pulitzer, J. Crew, or Vera Bradley, the brands I was quickly surrounded by and eventually swooning over in college.

Eventually I realized that having a certain brand on my clothes wasn't anywhere near as important as feeling good - and feeling like myself- in what I was wearing.  I decided not to worry about fitting in with the country club set and to just have fun.  Still, I love the way dressing up for football games is a way to embrace a Southern tradition and I think that the first game of the season is the perfect time for girls to break out their cutest sundresses and sandals.  I was inspired (by nostalgia for my undergrad days) to create two very traditional, preppy UVa game day outfits.

summer/fall color: sodalite and olympian blues

There was a solid chance of me going overboard with a post on ways to incorporate BLUE into the summer-into-fall wardrobe.  In high school, my mother actually put a moratorium on me buying any additional navy blue items of clothing because I had so many navy blue tops and dresses!  I love summery sodalite blue - a striking cobalt (I always get compliments when I wear the Target tee in the first board below!) as well as the olympian blue (a teal-tinged navy) we'll be seeing everywhere this fall.    Blue stripes or colorblocking add an instant nautical touch to an outfit, and blue with polka dots is fun and preppy without being over-the-top.

Pantone Winter 2012 - Coffee & Nougat for your wardrobe

Fall's neutrals are still holding strong this winter.  Here are a few items to warm up your transitional wardrobe as we get ready for spring to arrive.  I think these colors look great with a pop of pink, but that might just be because my brain is already looking forward to Valentine's Day and chocolatey goodness.

Start with a pretty, delicate sweater...

Accessorize with a Vera Bradley purse in Mocha Rouge...

Choose a casual bracelet...

And finish with a manicure in a color with a name that will make you smile!
