fall hair trend: ballet bun wedding hairstyles

Few hairstyles can add both sophistication and whimsy to a woman's style - a ballerina bun is the one that can.  Add a ballerina bun, and you're Audrey Hepburn meets the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Christian Siriano's Spring 2013 ready to wear show at Fashion Week paired ballerina buns with floaty, pastel frocks with floral appliques inspired by dancers and Degas' paintings.  I'm already having visions of bridesmaids wearing similar dresses in spring weddings, paired with simple white, cream or blush pink bouquets.

Celebrities are definitely getting in on this trend.  A ballerina bun is such a versatile hairstyle - it works for a wide range of events.

If you've been keeping up with The X-Factor, you've seen Demi Lovato wearing this style to the auditions- with and without her ends dyed pink.

I feel like no hair or beauty blog post is complete without a shout-out to how Lauren Conrad has already done it with way more style than we mere mortals will ever have, so here's a tutorial from Miss Tango 2 showing how to get Lauren Conrad's bow-trimmed bun.  A little too cutesy to be bridal for my tastes - I went to a college full of girls who were a bit hairbow-obsessed and can't stand ribbons near my hair too often as an adult- but for a young bridesmaid or flower girl I think the bow would be a nice touch.

The key to a ballerina bun is position - the crown of one's head.  It's a great hairstyle with a floaty chiffon dress and simple, elegant jewelry.  Instant sophistication.

Ballerina buns can be boho and twisty or perfectly sculpted and chic.  A ballerina bun adds even more elegance to a lace dress when paired with minimal, feminine makeup.

Camille Styles has a nice ballerina bun tutorial on her blog - this hairstyle is also known as a sock bun because there's usually some "filler" in there!  If you're hesitant to roll up a sock for your hair for a special event, Wedding Chicks offers The Soxy - a kit that includes a "sock" and three hair ties.

When I was a ballerina, I do not remember our buns looking this nice.  I remember bobby pins and pain.

My favorite take on the ballerina bun - I LOVE the braid wrapped around!
