sunday simplicity

“November comes
And November goes,
With the last red berries
And the first white snows.

With night coming early,
And dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket
And frost by the gate.

The fires burn
And the kettles sing,
And earth sinks to rest
Until next spring.”

LISTEN.
  • With our third wedding anniversary coming up this Wednesday, I was revisiting our social hour playlist.  I still love John Mayer's "Only Heart" as much as I did then!  I'll be linking up with Musical Mondays at My So-Called Chaos.

  • I love Maroon5, and I especially love the covers they've included on their recent albums.  Their version of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" from their most recent album, Overexposed, is so chill and laid-back; perfect dinner-party or reception music.

celebrate: brazilian-themed london 2012 closing ceremonies party recipes

BRAZILIAN FLAIR.
Photo of Brazilian athletes entering the Opening Ceremonies by Laurence Griffiths via Zimbio.

Since London is passing the Summer Olympic Games to Rio de Janeiro for 2016, I think a Brazilian themed party is the greatest idea for this Sunday!  Party stores and even dollar stores should have tropical-themed decorations on sale right now since it's the end of summer- just remember to steer more toward tropical than luau.  A pretty bowl or cake stand piled with pineapples, mangoes and other tropical fruit would be a simple but eye-catching centerpiece.

More Brazilian Recipes for Your Closing Ceremonies Party:
One of the major elements of the ceremony will be handover from London to Rio de Janeiro, host of the 2016 Olympic Games.  I think it would be fun to serve some Brazilian food at a Closing Ceremonies get-together.  I've shared a few Brazilian recipes on the blog recently, but here are even more Brazilian and Brazil-inspired dishes to try on Sunday!

Signature Cocktails?

We haven't decided yet whether to have an open bar or signature cocktails, wine and beer.  Or perhaps signature cocktails for the cocktail hour and open bar for the reception?  We'll be crunching our budget numbers once we order our cake and find a videographer.  If we do a signature cocktail, here are two ideas I think would suit us perfectly.

Mixed Berry Mojito (from My Life as a Mrs.):

Ingredients:
Mixed Berry Puree
1 cup blueberries, whole, 1 cup strawberries, caps removed and rough chopped

Mixed Berry Mojito
4 oz club soda, 2 ½ oz light rum, 1 ½ fresh lime juice, 1 oz simple syrup, 2 TBS mixed berry puree, 6-8 mint leaves, ½ strawberry, cap removed and sliced thin for garnish (optional), 5-6 blueberries, whole for garnish (optional), 1 small mint sprig, for garnish (optional)

Directions:
Mixed Berry Puree
1.  Combine berries and blend until smooth (food processor, blender, hand blender, etc.; really what ever is easiest to clean)
2.  Pour puree into a fine strainer over a container and press puree through the strainer with a spatula to remove seeds and skins from puree. Store puree in the refrigerator.

Mixed Berry Mojito
1.  In a tall glass, combine mint leaves, lime juice and simple syrup and gently muddle together (only bruise the leaves, not shred).
2.  Add ice (about 1 cup) and pour in rum and club soda.
3.  Spoon berry puree into drink and stir to incorporate all ingredients and lift mint leaves up from the bottom of the glass.
4.  Top with sliced strawberries, blueberries and mint sprig.

Here's a link to a similar recipe for a blue cocktail, and a link to a "Wild Berry Mojito" that includes blackberries and raspberries.

Spiked Arnold Palmer (from The Bridal Bar):

Ingredients (Serves 8):
1 cup packed mint leaves, chopped, 2/3-cup sugar, 1 cup fresh lemon juice, 1 cup freshly brewed tea, chilled, 1 1/2 cups vodka, Crushed ice for serving, Fresh mint springs, optional for garnish

Directions:
1.  Combine chopped mint and sugar in a large bowl or pitcher.
2.  Stir in lemon juice, iced tea, and vodka.
3.  Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes and up to 2 hours.
4.  Fill six 6-8 ounce glasses with crushed ice. Pour mixture over.
5.  Garnish with mint and lemon springs.

Here's another spiked Arnold Palmer recipe that uses Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka.

things i learned from wedding bloggers: mrs. bee

I like the idea of having regular "series" style posts on this blog, so today, in addition to "Sunday Simplicity," which will appear on schedule tomorrow, I'm rolling out a new idea: Things I Learned from Wedding Bloggers.

There seems to be a huge difference between brides who want to know everything about weddings, and stalk popular blogs for "wedding pr0n." Both of the vendors I've met with so far (florist and caterer) have commented on how "organized" I am and how I know what I want. They've also seemed surprised/confused by some ideas that I thought were pretty common in weddings due to all of the blogs I read (fruit in centerpieces, a dessert table with cake stands, and a sweetheart table instead of a head table with the whole bridal party). Apparently, most brides have no idea of what they want going into meetings with vendors. And apparently, these very blog-worthy trends haven't hit my part of the country yet. I wish my vendors read the same blogs I do- then they'd know exactly what I was talking about.

In this series I will be discussing the wedding blogs I read and the things I've learned (and ideas I've stolen) from their authors. I've been reading Weddingbee the longest, discovering it shortly after I first found the Knot in 2006. Yes, I've been stalking the wedding blogosphere for almost as long as I've been dating Mr. Spin.

Weddingbee began as Bee Kim's personal blog on Xanga while she was planning her own wedding, and has grown into one of the biggest names in wedding blogging. There are a total of 144 pages of posts by Mrs. Bee on the site today, so I am not going through all of her posts again (though I probably read most of them as they went live!). These are the things I've learned form Mrs. Bee's blog posts:

- To make sure that someone gets pictures of the small details (decor, favors, etc.) on the wedding day.
- That if I don't love my hair and make-up trial runs, I should have another trial or find a different stylist; not assume it will look better on the day of the wedding than it does in the trial.
- How to put together the Ultimate Emergency Kit!

Resources:
- Mrs. Bee created a great stationary guide to help brides sort out all the different paper goods we can have for our weddings.
- She posted a guide to the best weather months for honeymoons in various countries and parts of the U.S. In our wedding month, July, some of the recommended locations include Bermuda, Britain, Ireland, Fiji, and the Northeast U.S.!

Ideas to consider:
- Mrs. Bee raves about the advantages of a day-of coordinator.
- The Bees served signature cocktails at their wedding and they went over very well with her guests.
- Table visits by the bride and groom to welcome each guest.

What I've learned from being a wedding blog reader in general: every bride needs to be true to her personal style. For me, that means I want to incorporate little country/vintage details in my wedding style. And that means I'm going to be on the lookout for cake stands whether my caterer likes it or not. She'll be eating her words when she sees her mini cheesecakes and chocolate covered strawberries on an amazing display! I think I'm going to have our "official" cake baker make a 2-layer vanilla cake with buttercream icing and ask friends/family to make a strawberry cake with cream cheese icing (my favorites) and a chocolate dessert- either cake or pie. I want the dessert table to be so overflowing with goodness that our guests have to take some home!
