Style: What to Pack for Summer Camp

One childhood memory I don't think I'll ever forget comes from my very first summer at 4-H camp.  One morning during the daily flag ceremony, our group's counselors were walking up and down the line of kids, trying to get them to stand still and be quiet, which is a lot to ask of 9-12 year olds at 7:30 A.M.  Rule follower that I was, I was standing in line between my bunkmates, hand over my heart and ready for the pledge.  I heard my counselor, Kate, tell her best friend, "She's, like, the perfect little camper."

The truth that first summer was, I didn't feel like the perfect little camper.  I was homesick - I'd never been away from my mom for more than a night - and I didn't see what the big fuss was about all of the outdoor activities and competitions.  I would have been happy to find a shady spot under a tree and read a book or draw pictures for a week, but instead, we had to be somewhere and do something all the time.  As the week went on, the horse barn started to call my name, the cold water in the pool felt better each afternoon, campfire seemed like a magical and otherworldly experience, and the older girls in my cabin (they were sixth graders, and therefore had an air of sophistication) started to feel like big sisters (they taught me to use mascara!).  I'd caught the camp bug.

Fast forward to today, and I'm still camping - this time as an adult volunteer.  I'll probably be in a kayak when this post goes live.  I hope the little girls in my lodge aren't perfect campers, because how boring would that be?  I may not be a Girl Scout, but I pride myself on always being prepared for camp - the perfect camper is all grown up.  This post is for anyone packing for camp as a counselor, staff member, or adult volunteer this summer!

Packing For Camp - Basics

The basics:
  • Comfortable, casual tops for summer weather.  Most organized summer camps have a dress code similar to what local middle and high schools have, so tank tops should have thick straps.  If your camp provides t-shirts, woohoo!  One less thing to worry about.
  • Bottoms appropriate for what activities you'll be involved in.  Keep that dress code in mind - shorts should probably have at least a 5 inch inseam.  If you'll be doing any climbing or zip-lining, bring soft, Bermuda-length shorts - regular jean shorts can be really uncomfortable with a harness!  If you'll be riding a horse, jeans or capris are a must to prevent saddle sores.
  • Twice as many undergarments as you think you'll need - you'll thank me later when a midday change of clothes gives you a more cheerful outlook on life.  Cotton is best because it's breathable.  Don't forget socks if you'll be wearing sneakers or boots!
  • A light hoodie or flannel shirt for chilly mornings and evenings.
  • A light raincoat with a hood.   No one wants to deal with an umbrella at camp.
  • A backpack or drawstring bag so you don't have to run back to your cabin.

Footwear appropriate to your program area or activities:
  • If you'll be around horses: closed toes are a must for riding, boots are good if you'll be leading the horse in any capacity (horses just don't understand that our feet are tiny and fragile).
  • At my camp, all shoes must have a heel strap - this has drastically reduced the number of injuries!  Tevas might not be the most attractive shoes in the world, but they get the job done, and Keen's closed-toe sandals are ideal for aquatic activities like canoeing and kayaking.

Beat-the-heat essentials:
  • A water bottle that will clip onto your backpack
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen
  • Lip balm with SPF
  • Several bandanas, headbands, and hair ties
Toiletries:  soap, shampoo and conditioner (I avoid floral and sweet-smelling products to decrease the risk of insect stings and bites), toothbrush and toothpaste, razor (I love the Venus + Olay razor so I don't have to pack shave gel), strong deodorant, hairbrush, towels and washcloths (that you wouldn't mind losing)

Medications:  Some camps require counselors and volunteers to check all meds - even the OTC stuff - with the camp EMT or nurse.  Be sure to follow the rules!
  • Allergy medication
  • Allergy cream (bugs WILL bite you)
  • Benzocaine swabs to treat bee stings
  • Triple antibiotic ointment
  • Something for sore muscles (BioFreeze is amazing!)
  • Assorted bandages
  • Insect repellent (check your camp's policies - DEET products may be banned)
  • Aloe vera for treating sunburn
  • Eye drops (sitting around a campfire can cause irritation!)

Pool/lake gear:
  • A one-piece bathing suit or tankini.  My camp has banned bathing suits that tie, which should make sense to anyone who has jumped into a body of water while wearing one and experienced a wardrobe malfunction.  I avoid wearing brightly colored or floral print bathing suits because stinging insects can be attracted to them, and I don't wear red because I don't want to be confused with the lifeguard.
  • Multiple beach towels (so that one can be hanging out to dry while one is in use).

Good to have:
  • A water resistant sports watch with an alarm (don't rely on your phone).
  • Waterproof disposable camera.
  • A plastic/mesh bag to take wet bathing suits and towels home in (I skip this because I throw everything into the washing machine as soon as I get home anyway).

My June Favorites [Favorite Things Link-Up]

My June Favorites

Disclaimer:  Amazon links contain an affiliate code.

1. Ray-Ban "Jackie Ohh" sunglasses - Breeze helped me find these on our birthday week shopping trip.  I'd had the same Ralph Lauren sunglasses since college and they were starting to fall apart.  Finding these at LensCrafters made my day - I love the brown-to-lilac gradient of the frames and they're big sunglasses without being comically large.

2. Lia Sophia "High Tide" earrings - One of my most-worn Lia pieces, these little pavĂ© starfish are perfect for summer and go with everything.

3. FOX reality competition shows - Of course it's a bummer that all the series I love are on summer hiatus, but that also means that MasterChef and So You Think You Can Dance are back!

4. John Frieda Frizz-Ease Smooth Start Shampoo and Conditioner - I've tried pretty much every shampoo and conditioner out there that promise to reduce frizz because humidity makes my hair go crazy in the summer.  The good news is that this drugstore product works just as well as some of the higher-end versions and my hair feels really soft when I use it.  I wish I could find something equally frizz-reducing but sulfate-free - does anyone have any suggestions?

5. Method vanilla creme hand soap - usually I'm not a fan of dessert-y scented products, but between the beautiful packaging, too-good-to-pass-up price (I think it was $2.50 at Target), and unbelievably realistic vanilla bean scent of this hand soap, I was sold.

6. J. Crew Factory Teagan ruffle popover - I've seen this style of top featured in tons of Polyvore sets, and after reading a few reviews on other blogs I took a chance when J. Crew Factory was having a spring clearance sale.  As a lady with a chest, I'm wary of tops with buttons, but a carefully placed safety pin solved the gapping problem and I get compliments every time I wear this top.  I also like to wear it with the collar folded down, like this...

Getting photo-bombed at my birthday brunch.

6. Delta Rae - This family-based band has become one of my favorites since I saw the video for "Bottom of the River" and a live performance of the same song on YouTube.  They remind me of a modern day Fleetwood Mac with a Southern twist (the band formed in Durham, NC).  I can't wait to see them perform live later this month - Mr. Q got us tickets for my birthday!

What are you loving most this month?  Post your favorites and join the link-ups below with me - it's a great way to share the love and meet new bloggers.

A Classic Spring Break

It's finally here - my little break from work and normalcy.  While I'm going to be staycationing this weekend, I'm dreaming of getting away. The weather is so unpredictable here that I'm more likely going to be found in a hoodie or sweater - but that doesn't mean I won't be adding fun spring touches - switching out boots for ballet flats and perhaps donning a new pair of sunglasses.  I'm loving classic navy paired with placid blue for a fresh spring look.  For those of you lucky enough to be taking a dip this weekend, I can't recommend Sara Blakely's line of swimsuits for Target enough - I have one from last summer and adore it.  They're made with the same materials as Spanx so they are super flattering.

Fall 2013: Dijon and Seafoam

As soon as I saw this Tracy Reese runway photo from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City I became obsessed with the color pairing.  The spring outfit pairs a light teal sweater embellished with black and white flowers with a dijon-yellow top and black shorts.  Tracy Reese always uses yellow in really creative ways in her collection, and I got to thinking about how to pair these colors in a way more appropriate for fall.  This fall's popular dijon mustard yellow looks great with pops of seafoam teal, and together they pair well with cognac brown, gray, or black!  It's an unusual combination, but I think it works!

I'm sure you've already noticed the prevalence of mossy greens in fashion this season.  I am loving these go-with-everything shades, which fall along a spectrum from peridot to dark olive and can be dressed up or down to suit any style.  The Charlotte Russe scarf below and an olive sweater just got added to my wish list for fall.

style: summer outfits inspired by country music's leading ladies

In case you couldn't tell, I REALLY enjoyed creating yesterday's style board in honor of the queens of country music.  Several of today's stars were represented in the Hall of Fame's museum, including Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, and Taylor Swift... which got me thinking, which of today's leading ladies of country will be the Hall of Fame members of tomorrow?  And, more importantly, how can I dress like they do?

Country Music Hall of Fame - Girls with Guitars

Visit this board on Polyvore

Carrie Underwood's costumes from the "Blown Away" tour are currently on display at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.  They are glamorous and mysterious, almost like something from a fantasy or science fiction movie.  I have heard that her concerts are amazing, and I can understand why.  I can see her wearing this ModCloth one-shoulder dress, drop earrings, glittery pumps, and Juicy Couture geometic cuff from ShopBop (similar from ShopAkira).  All that's missing is a blinged-out microphone.

Miranda Lambert is my country-girl idol, and this outfit was inspired by her quote, "I'll never dance around on stage in a halter top. I will always play my guitar" as well as the homemade baseball cap she donated to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, which has a picture of her idol, Merle Haggard.  I chose a Merle tee from E-Bay and Current/Elliott cutoffs from The Outnet (similar from Tilly's) with a Fossil tri-tone bracelet from Macy's and Resistol boots from Country Outfitter.  The pistol necklace from Etsy is a nod to her side project, the Pistol Annies.

Kimberly Schlapman is one-fourth of Little Big Town and hosts her own cooking show on GAC.  Her style is really cool and current and she's not afraid to try trends, so I think she'd be happy in a J. Crew Factory chambray shirt, Newlook lace skater skirt, and Sam Edelman animal-print sandals from JulesB with a bright red Monsoon clutch.

Taylor Swift has a really unique personal style that was fun to base an outfit around.  I paired a Breton stiped tee from Calypso-Celle (similar from Jack Wills) with an AX denim skater skirt from The Hut, then accessorized with Ray-Ban Wayfarer sunglasses from Piperlime (similar from Forever21), red lipstick from Cover Girl, red Converse Chuck Taylor sneakers from Finish Line, and a Kate Spade composition book tablet cover.

Hillary Scott from Lady Antebellum is currently rocking the maternity wear and has been wearing a lot of black, so I paired a Miss Selfridge moto jacket (similar from Topshop) with a Merona lace-sleeved top from Target and Liz Lange for Target leggings.  Merona flats, Jane Hollinger drop earrings from Ylang23 (similar from Bluefly), and OPI nail polish in "Lincoln Park After Dark" complete an edgy-meets-glam look.

Jennifer Nettles from Sugarland is very free spirited onstage and her songs are full of heart.  I chose a True Religion tee from Stylebop (similar tees available from Tilly's here and here), topped it with an American Eagle fringed vest, and added a pair of Diesel flares from Farfetch (similar from Mango).  This outfit was begging for a Lucky Brand necklace, and I'm a little bit in love with the Wanted red ankle boots from Amazon.

style: summer outfits inspired by the Country Music Hall of Fame

One of the coolest things about the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville is seeing classic country artists' stage costumes.  I was particularly inspired by seeing items that belonged to the women I consider the mamas and grandmothers of country music.  I decided to play around with the idea of country music's pioneering women, re-imagined for the modern girl.

Country Music Hall of Fame

Kitty Wells, best known for the song "It Wasn't Got Who Made Honky Tonk Angels," was a Nashville native and is known today as the Queen of Country Music.  Every female country singer whose songs push the envelope follows in her footsteps!  Kitty's style was feminine and fun, so I chose a Modcloth polka dot dress, red Mango flats, a rhinestone hair accessory from Forever21 (sold in a set of 2), and Butter London nail polish in "Come to Bed Red" from Karmaloop.

Patsy Cline is one of country's iconic figures for her unique voice and sassy attitude.  Many of her stage costumes featured Western touches, but she also kept up with the fashions of the 1960's, so I paired an embroidered blouse from Ruche with Blank NYC capris from Lord and Taylor and a pair of Zara booties.  These floral wayfarer-style sunglasses from Delia*s are adorable, and Topshop's Lip Bullet in Rockabilly is a modern take on Patsy's signature red lipstick.

Loretta Lynn went from Kentucky coalminer's daughter to sparkling superstar, made history for writing songs with a feminist viewpoint, and has collaborated with Jack White - all of those things make her one of my favorites.  The Hall of Fame featured her quote, "I enjoy seeing me change from Loretta, the gal in jeans, to Loretta, the lady in the long gown.  It's a little like seeing one of the Hollywood stars appear before my own eyes."  I decided to create an outfit that was a little of both - a Ruche chambray shirt with the sleeves cut off paired with a tulle skirt from Modcloth, and Modcloth drop earrings and Dorothy Perkins bangles paired with simple sandals from LOFT.

Dolly Parton has gone from a very humble background to being a successful musician, actress, businesswoman, and philanthropist.  This outfit was inspired by some of her early album covers - a plaid tie-front blouse from Delia*s, Topshop lace skater skirt, vintage cowgirl boots from Modcloth (similar Justin boots are available from Zappos), and a crossbody bag also from Delia*s.

June Carter Cash began performing when she was ten years old and was soon as well known for her sense of humor as she was for her voice.  Inspired by June's lace dress from her wedding to Johnny Cash, I paired a Ruche dress with lace TOMS, a Betsey Johnson necklace from Macy's (what says "I keep a close watch on this heart of mine" like a key necklace?) and Deborah Lippmann nail polish in "Mermaid's Dream" from Zappos for a little sparkle.

Emmylou Harris is an Alabama-born folk country singer-songwriter with an angelic voice.  Her style tends to be a little bohemian, so I paired a Modcloth lace cardigan with a John Lewis tribal print tank and True Religion jeans from MyTheresa (similar skinny jeans can be found at Forever21).  Lucky Brand booties from Piperlime, Dior aviator sunglasses from Saks (similar from Asos) and a Lucky Brand turquoise bangle complete this look.
